    Moving from TBHS:

    An active member of the National Honor Society in good standing who transfers from this school will be given a letter indicating the status of their membership signed by the principal upon request.  

    Moving to TBHS:

    An active member of the National Honor Society who transfers to this school will be automatically accepted for membership in this chapter upon proof of membership, specifically a letter from the student’s past adviser and a token of membership. This transfer member must maintain the membership requirements for this chapter in order to retain their membership.

  • How do I actually join NHS?

    This is found in Article II of our Bylaws.     

    Membership in this chapter shall be based on scholarship, service, leadership, and character.         

    Candidates shall have spent at least one semester in Troy Buchanan High School and shall be seniors, juniors, or second semester sophomores. In the 2019-2020 school year and beyond, candidates eligible for election to the chapter shall have earned a weighted 3.8 cumulative grade point average in accordance with the Cum Laude standards.

     

    The scholastic level of achievement shall remain fixed and shall be for this chapter; the required scholarship achievement for admission in this chapter, and all pupils who can rise in scholarship to or above such standard level shall be admitted to candidacy for election to membership. Their eligibility shall then be considered on their service found in both school and community, leadership, and character from staff recommendations. Specifically, applicants should have the following on their application to be considered for acceptance: 

    Sophomores- 10 community service hours, 5 school volunteer service hours, 3 leadership hours accumulated throughout the applicant’s high school career

    Juniors- 12 community service hours, 8 school volunteer service hours, 5 leadership hours accumulated throughout the applicant’s high school career

    Seniors- 15 community service hours, 10 school volunteer service hours, 7 leadership hours accumulated throughout the applicant’s high school career

       

    The election of members to this chapter shall be by the National Honor Society Faculty Council, consisting of five members of the faculty, who are to be chosen by the building principal and the faculty adviser(s). The faculty adviser(s) will have no say in who gets accepted.

    Teacher input and principal approval will be required, making sure the students have a clean school disciplinary record.

  • Who can go to convention?

    Anyone in NHS can go to convention, as long as you are in good standing and have paid the convention fees. Convention for the 2019-2020 school year is March 3-4.

  • NHS Group vs. Individual Hours- What are these?

    In addition to the required GPA of a weighted 3.8, members of NHS must complete the following per semester: 4 Leadership Hours, 6 Group Hours, 4 Independent Hours. 

    If a member is in the first semester after induction (Spring of their induction year), they must complete the following for the semester: 3 Leadership Hours, 3 Group Hours, 3 Independent Hours. These hours will not count if it is service to a family member.

    • Group Hours= service hours found through NHS. These opportunities will be posted and sent out to students. 
      • Trick or Treat, Food Pantry, Campus Cleanups, etc.
    • Independent Hours= service hours from outside organizations. This can be other school sponsored organizations, community organizations, church organizations, etc. Note- if a student is receiving compensation this does NOT count as service. Students may not count hours if the service is to a family member.
      • PAALS, Boy Scouts, 4H, worship teams, nursing home volunteering, sandbagging, etc.

  • Requirements: How many hours do I need?

    2019-2020 School Year 

    In addition to the required GPA of a weighted 3.8, members of NHS must complete the following per semester: 4 Leadership Hours, 6 Group Hours, 4 Independent Hours. 

    Note: 

    Students who were inducted in the Spring of 2018 or 2019 will be grandfathered into the unweighted 3.5 GPA. Students inducted in the Spring of 2020 and beyond will need to meet the GPA requirement of a weighted 3.8, in accordance with Cum Laude standards.

    If a member is in the first semester after induction (Spring of their induction year), they must complete the following for the semester: 3 Leadership Hours, 3 Group Hours, 3 Independent Hours. These hours will not count if it is service to a family member.

    Example of each of the hours are outlined in the following:

    • Leadership= a position of organization, or leading, in which the member has responsibility to an organization. These can be found within NHS or outside of NHS. Note- if a student is receiving compensation this does NOT count as leadership.
      • Heading a committee, organizing an event, teaching a class, tutoring hours (not A+ hours)
    • Group Hours= service hours found through NHS. These opportunities will be posted and sent out to students.
      • Trick or Treat, Food Pantry, Campus Cleanups, etc.
    • Independent Hours= service hours from outside organizations. This can be other school sponsored organizations, community organizations, church organizations, etc. Note- if a student is receiving compensation this does NOT count as service.     Spring 2019: 

    For each semester you must have 10 hours total. These are broken down into:

    Leadership Hours= Three hours

    Service Hours= Seven hours

    -Three NHS sponsored service hours (show up to trick-or-treat in the fall, that is an easy three hours!)

    -Four individually found service hours (though these could also be through NHS).
