Lincoln County CAPS - Healthcare Strand
Instructor: Stacey Flieg
The Lincoln County CAPS Healthcare Strand embeds associates in medical settings, providing authentic experiences in the dynamic field of medicine and healthcare. Alongside some of the region's most experienced medical professionals, associates will advance their understanding of human physiology, disease process, medical terminology, patient care, professionalism, ethics, and explore the many career opportunities in healthcare. In the classroom, associates will develop fluency in basic medical language, practice physical assessment skills, and perform patient care and procedures within a simulated environment. Associates will also learn from diverse healthcare providers who visit as guest lecturers and mentors. Outside the classroom, learning experiences will involve numerous site visits to medical and healthcare facilities, exposing associates to various medical professions, medical research, and innovative advancements. Additional opportunities will be available to explore the fields of dentistry, veterinary medicine, sports medicine, mental health, insurance, and optometry. The first several weeks of the course will include a Professional Skills Boot Camp where associates practice and learn professional skills including communication and collaboration, time and project management, creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem solving, and integrity and trust.
The objective of this course is to have associates begin thinking, writing, and discussing creatively and critically about their educational and professional goals in the health sciences. This course will prepare associates with a foundation of knowledge about career options in the allied health professions, health care systems, employment and leadership skills, and health and wellness. The course is also designed to provide the student with the knowledge and skill to apply appropriate techniques to properly identify and subsequently treat injuries and illnesses. The student will have the opportunity to complete and demonstrate competencies to help prepare for, and cope with emergencies; to enhance self-reliance and concern for others.
