Troy Buchanan High School is proud to announce the official launch of its Army Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) program, opening new pathways for student leadership, character development, and civic engagement starting this school year.

The District began pursuing a JROTC program charter in 2024 and received the Army’s final approval for the program and the hiring of its Senior Army Instructor this fall. Leading the program at TBHS is Senior Army Instructor Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Dwayne Griffey, who brings decades of military leadership and instructional experience to the district. 

LTC(r) Griffey served in the United States Army, Army Reserve, and National Guard from 1991 through his retirement in August of this year. In his most recent role, he acted as the National Guard Chief of Staff at Fort Leonard Wood. Throughout his 35 years of service, he led, trained, and mentored soldiers as a Private through Lieutenant Colonel. LTC(r) Griffey also received several awards during his service, including the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, and Airborne Qualified. 

"We are thrilled to welcome LTC(r) Griffey to our team and bring the JROTC program to Troy Buchanan High School," said Superintendent Frederickson. "Every student deserves pathways that inspire them, and this program builds character and confidence that will carry them forward, no matter what journey they choose after high school."

The JROTC program offers a comprehensive, year-long elective course available to all students in grades 9 through 12. Designed to foster citizenship, personal responsibility, and teamwork, the curriculum requires no prerequisites, making it accessible to any student eager to develop essential life skills. While sponsored by the military, JROTC is a leadership and character development program; participating does not require military service or commitment.
