    6. Resource Highlight

  • Hello Team,

I wanted to share a quick update on the School Health Advisory Committee (SHAC), formerly known as the Wellness Committee. Our first meeting for the 2025-26 school year was held on August 21, 2025, and I’m excited about the direction we’re heading as a district.

    Committee Structure

    • SHAC will include up to 20 members, serving two-year terms.
    • Members represent a wide range of voices: medical professionals, representatives from Hawk Point, Moscow Mills, and Troy, Chartwells staff, curriculum, PE staff, and community partners.

    Meeting Schedule

    • SHAC will meet quarterly from 4:00–5:00 PM in the Powell Conference Room (Central Office).

Meeting dates for the remainder of the school year are as follows:

    4/29/2026 - 4:00-5:00, Powell Conference room

    Priority Areas

We identified three focus areas for this year:

    1. Smart Snacks/Student Nutrition – Each building will form a small subcommittee(Wellness Committee) to review vending machines, canteens, and classroom snacks to ensure healthy options.
    2. Staff Wellness – We’ll focus on supporting staff health through activities such as wellness challenges and a potential health fair.

    3. Community Engagement & Communications – Promoting opportunities, such as local fitness events, and sharing wellness information through ParentSquare and the district website.

    4.

    Goals & Next Steps

    • Establish building-level subcommittees (these can meet during or after school).
    • Review practices to make sure we’re aligned with wellness regulations—especially Smart Snacks requirements.
    • Share resources, like the DESE Wellness Resource Page, to make this work easier and more consistent across buildings.
    • Work on the assessment of our current policy and regulations for the Wellness policy

    How You Can Help

Your support at the building level is key. We’d love for you to:

    • Encourage staff to take part in building wellness efforts.
    • Help identify who might serve on your building’s nutrition subcommittee.
    • Share ideas that could strengthen staff wellness or community engagement.

Together, we can make SHAC a meaningful committee that supports both our students and staff. Thank you for your leadership in bringing these initiatives to life in your buildings.

    1. Staff Wellness Update
    •  The committee was reminded that the first employee health challenge, “Movember,” has begun.
      •  Mustaches for Men’s Health Awareness
      • Move 4 Her for Women’s Health Awareness
      • 60 Miles for the Month Challenge (walking, running, or biking) to promote Suicide Awareness

    • Feedback was requested regarding offering flu shots at the Wellness Expo on January 5, 2026. SHAC members were asked to check with their building-level contacts to determine employee interest. It was suggested that a staff survey be distributed to collect feedback.
    • Building-level wellness committees, led by school nurses, have started meeting. Some buildings have already met while others are still in the planning phase. These groups are providing valuable feedback, supporting district-wide wellness challenges, and hosting their own initiatives. Meetings are planned quarterly.
    1. Review of Triennial Wellness Assessment Findings (September 2025)
    •  The committee reviewed results from the recent Triennial Wellness Assessment.
    •  It was noted that:
      • The district is audited by DESE or a third-party vendor every five years, but should complete the Triennial Assessment every three years.
      • As part of the National School Lunch Program, LCR3 is required to have a SHAC.
    • Assessment Results:
      • Policy Score: 51/100
      • Comprehensiveness Score: 75/100
    • The group reviewed each category and discussed how Mende and Kaytlynn scored them. Some members noted that certain categories may have been scored incorrectly
    • Due to time constraints, the assessment was completed using the best available knowledge when feedback from category leaders was not received.
    • It was suggested that the Triennial Assessment be moved to a Google Doc with an added “Notes” column so members can collectively update and refine responses.
    • One area discussed was determining how many students walk or bike to school. It was noted that the following schools currently have students who walk or bike: BE, HPE, MSE, WCE, TSE, and TSMS.
    • The overall goal for SHAC is to achieve 80% compliance.
    • Food Service Discussion:
      • The committee discussed food items sold and served within the district.
      • Chartwells will handle these areas or assist in providing guidance for schools not using their services.
      • Chartwells will also partner with secondary schools to review vending machine options and consider healthier alternatives.
    1. Policy Updates
    • The committee discussed the need to review district board policies to ensure all required elements from the Triennial Assessment are represented.
    • Some policies may need to be added or reworded to align with compliance standards.
    1. Accountability and Reporting
    • Building-level committees and SHAC members will assist in ensuring compliance within their respective buildings.
    • HR will partner with SHAC to ensure policies and employee handbooks are updated as needed.
    1. Next Steps
    • SHAC members will continue reviewing the Triennial Assessment and add notes in the shared Google Doc.
    • HR will review policies and identify necessary updates.
